Summer is near and with it farmers markets filled with fresh, locally-grown fruits, vegetables, herbs and honey.

For some of the older population on a limited income, it can be difficult to afford that farm-fresh produce.

The Elderbridge Agency on Aging offers a Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program, which provides vouchers, or checks, for seniors to use to purchase items at authorized farmers markets and roadside stands.

The vouchers are available for individuals aged 60 and older who live in the Elderbridge 29-county service area and meet the yearly income equal to or less than $25,142 ($33,874 for married couples).

Those interested in the farmers market vouchers can apply at their local meal site center or contact the Elderbridge Agency on Aging office at 800-243-0678.

Meal sites can be found at https://elderbridge.org/meal-site-locations. The meal sites in Fort Dodge are located at Citizens Central, 617 Central Ave., and the Deer Creek Apartments, 700 S. 17th St.

Each eligible participant will receive 10 vouchers worth a total of $30.

The Fort Dodge Area Farmers Market is located at the parking lot north of Brown’s Shoe Fit, 210 S. 25th St. from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesdays and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. The vouchers from Elderbridge are accepted at the Fort Dodge Area Farmers Market through the end of the season in October.
